In order to overcome fears, first of all, it’s helpful to find the source of that fear. Just as a problem is resolved much more effectively if you can first find the source of the problem, the same also applies with your fears.

So, if you’re serious about getting rid of your fears in order to lead a more rewarding life, then it is important to take care of this step before going any further.

First, let’s talk about WHY finding the source of your fear is important. In many cases, identifying the triggers for your fear may be enough to manage, combat or, totally eliminate them. Regardless of the type of fear you have, there is ALWAYS a source that triggers it.

One effective way to do this is listing your fears and their level of intensity. The way to do this would be to put aside about 45 minutes to an hour, where you can have some private, uninterrupted time to yourself. Just remember to spend a few minutes to completely relax before beginning.

Then, start writing down any and all of your fears, listing them down on a sheet of paper. These could include anything from a fear of flying, spiders, crowds, enclosed places, or even conditions like a fear of failing, being destitute, or being alone. Even if you only have one fear, go ahead and write it down.

Next, alongside these fears, rank them with a number from one to ten. One being the lowest in intensity, and ten being the highest. Even if you only have one fear, go ahead and give it an intensity rating between one to ten.

Following that, go through each fear on the list, and make a note alongside of each one as to what triggers it. Take note of both environmental and external triggers. Things like being in an elevator might trigger a fear of being in enclosed places for some people. You might also want to take note of any emotional triggers, such as being rejected for a job triggering insecurity or a fear of failure.

Finally, go through each fear, and ask yourself whether there was SOMETHING in your past that created this fear. Basically, ask yourself “Why am I afraid?” of each of the fears on your list and write down any insights that come up for you.

This exercise alone is often enough to eliminate MANY irrational fears.

For the more stubborn fears, I suggest the following steps in order to see if you can manage and control your fears on your own, before deciding whether you need professional assistance. Sometimes, if our lives are too stressful or negative, or we aren’t happy, we may be susceptible to feeling more fears. So make an effort to find reasons to laugh, or enjoy life more. Pursue a hobby or an interest that you enjoy. Watch a movie or spend time with people, to maintain a more positive frame of mind.

The other thing you could try is visualization…..

Allow yourself some time each day to find a place where you won’t be disturbed and able to just RELAX and visualize yourself in control of your fears. Your objective is to transport yourself into a low stress situation where YOU have total control over your fear, instead of the other way around.

You might want to imagine your fear as a SOLID object that you DESTROY! This image has been used for MANY hundreds of years by MANY cultures and is very effective in calming fear.

If you find that your fears are not reduced or eliminated by these processes, it may be time to seek professional help.

There are a number of processes and modalities currently available that are very effective in healing fears and phobias that are effective, quick, and, in many cases, permanent. I find that with most of my clients, between three and five sessions with a combination of the NLP Fast Phobia Cure along with light hypnosis is sufficient.

Just remember, most fears are irrational, take place in your mind, and have very little to do with reality.

No one deserves to live their life in constant worry or fear. You do however deserve to live an anxiety-free life that liberates you and provides you with more opportunity for growth and a life free from irrational fears.
